Repeat Prescriptions

If you are on long-term medication, at the doctor's discretion, you may be able to obtain repeat prescriptions by telephoning reception, calling at the reception desk or on-line access.  For further details on this service please contact reception.

However, it is most important that you make an appointment to see the doctor at the intervals which he/she has recommended to you so that you can have your health state checked and find out whether the medication that you are taking is still the most appropriate, or requires adjustment. The receptionist will remind you to make an appointment with the doctor when you are ordering your last authorised prescription.

Repeat Prescription Request and Collection

  1. Requests for repeat prescriptions should not be made more than five days early. Where possible, please ring between 11.30am and 4.30pm, giving 48 hours notice when requiring your repeat prescriptions. Please do not let your medication run out and please try to avoid requesting repeat prescriptions at weekends and statutory holidays when reception is closed.
  2. At the request of patients or their representatives, the practice will retain prescriptions for collection by designated  pharmacy.
  3. No member of clerical staff may read a prescription to a pharmacist over the telephone unless in exceptional circumstances when requested to do so by the doctor. This is to avoid error and minimise blocking of telephone lines.
  4. In exceptional circumstances a doctor of the practice may contact a pharmacy by telephone and authorise same to dispense as necessary or they may delegate a clerical member of the practice to carry this out on their behalf. In either case the appropriate prescription will be completed and retained at reception for collection in due course by the relevant pharmacy. Unless a prescription is required very urgently such telephone requests will only be made between 12.00am and 2.00pm and 4.30pm and 5.00pm.

Exceptional circumstances as described in (1) above are taken to cover the following situations:

  • When a patient is genuinely house bound and has no means of collecting a prescription at reception that day.
  • When a patient is deemed unable to deal with their own medication requirements including making necessary arrangements for collection.
  • For very seriously ill patients where medication must be supplied without delay.
  • Any other situations as agreed by doctor and pharmacist on a one-off basis.
